I previously mentioned that I snapped some pictures of Joplin on our return trip back to Texas following my brother's wedding. The devastation is unspeakable, and we only witnessed a very small snapshot. Continue to keep the people who suffered from that tragedy in your prayers. Here's the little bit that we saw.

Beyond the Academy was The Home Depot, which was completely destroyed. Seven people were killed inside, including a father and his two young children. The family was on their way home after having had dinner with the wife/mother. She was headed to work, and as the storm arrived, the husband and children sought refuge in The Home Depot. She survived, they didn't. Oh how my heart goes out to that woman! I doubt I'll ever meet her, but I've prayed for her numerous times!

This home suffered damage, but was at least standing. They have much to be thankful for, since everything around them was destroyed.

The electrical poles seen in the rear-view mirror are new; they were put up after the tornado. As you drive by them, you can tell they're freshly cut, and the smell of cut wood--due to the broken trees caused by the tornado and the chainsaw work after the storm--wafts strongly through the air

Many streets, like this one, were completely leveled. Nothing remains but piles and piles of rubble scattered randomly and tossed about like Tinker Toys.

Street names are spray painted onto the road or a nearby structure.

This picture is so compelling to me because it shows a home that's been completely devastated, and yet, a picture still hangs on the wall!

They need our prayers. Please continue to pray.

Mark and Brittany's Wedding

This past weekend, we traveled to Missouri for my youngest brother's wedding. We headed up on Wednesday and were able to spend several days with a host of family members, including my grandparents who were meeting Faith for the first time. Ironically, she is about the same age Trey was when they first met him. The weekend was jam-packed (wedding weekends tend to be that way), but it was a lot of fun. Mark and Brittany had asked me to help facilitate the details of the big day, so I found myself rather busy the day of the wedding. Additionally, I had Faith slung over one hip the entire time. So while I was able to get some pics, I wasn't able to snap nearly as many photos as I would have liked. Sadly, I didn't get a single pic of Trey coming down the aisle as the ringbearer. :-( I'm crossing my fingers that someone did, and I can get copies (hint, hint: if you're reading this, and you got a pic of him, please let me know!) Still, I snagged a few shots amidst the busyness. Now the happy couple is off honeymooning. Congratulations to them!

On our way back to Texas, we snapped some pictures of the destruction in Joplin. I will post those later. It is exceptionally sad. For now, here are some highlights of the weekend.

Hiking

We went down to Dinosaur Valley State Park (Glen Rose) yesterday and did a little hiking. We hiked for three hours, and the kids did fantastic! BJ carried Faith on his back, who napped in the carrier for a little less than half the hike. Trey hiked with us the entire time and loved it! It was slow going, since Trey wanted to stop every couple minutes and throw rocks in the water, but that was kind of the point ... letting him get out and enjoy nature while taking it at his own pace. Here are a few pics I snapped with my phone.

Stats & Development Update

Last week I towed Trey & Faith to the doc for Trey's 3-year well-baby and Faith's 6-month well-baby visit. Here are their stats and some of their developmental progressions.

TREY is tall and lean. He weighs in at 35.5 pounds and 39.25 inches. It won't be too long before my little boy is taller than me! His vocabulary and comprehension are remarkable. He's barely 3, and we carry on quite in-depth conversations. His imagination is quite alive, and he can entertain himself for stretches of time by pretending like he's going to the "store" (Central Market is his most frequent trip). He often takes one or a few stuffed animals with him. The other day he told me he had an imaginary friend (I forget his name), and I thought it was so much fun! I can't believe he's already to that stage.

We're currently working on the sounds that different letters make and connecting those with words. He loves to ask me, "What does (insert word) start with?" And I'll ask him, "What do you think? Sound it out." He'll sound it out and most of the time he'll answer with the correct letter. He's also learning to trace his letters. At school, he is a friend to everyone. His best buddies are Jackson & Will, but he's also beginning to become good friends with some of the girls. I had two moms of little girls tell me the other day that their daughter's talk about Trey often.

And when it comes to sports and playtime, Trey is his daddy's son. We can no longer pitch a baseball to him in the backyard because he's hit it over the fence so many times we're tired of asking the neighbor's to return our ball. We now take him to the park where he plays baseball and soccer. We've contemplated enrolling him in tee-ball, but I'm afraid he may be bored, so we're leaning towards soccer for now. He also (fittingly) loves football and recently attended a TCU practice with BJ. Trey and one of his friends ran the field and tackled one another the entire time. He is all boy, and we love him to pieces for it. But underneath that rough-and-tumble exterior, he is sweet as sugar (just like his daddy here too). This morning, as we were heading to the zoo, he spontaneously told me, "Mommy, you look pretty." Ohh, he just melts my heart sometimes! He's stubborn as a mule (like his Momma), but comments like those make up for any "spirited" outbursts!

Our sweet FAITH is nearing 7 months (how is that already possible?), and at her 6-month appointment she tipped the scales at 20.75 pounds and measured 27.5 inches. There's no question that our little girl is well nourished, and we love all of her many rolls!

In the past couple weeks she has really began to work on crawling. She pushes up onto all fours and then lifts her little bottom into the air trying to figure out just how in the world she's supposed to make her knee move forward! She scoots back and rolls around, so it will be only a matter of weeks before she's mobile. She sits unaided rather well, though let her sit for too long and she'll topple over. She loves her toes, and will often grab at them and then suck on her big toe.

She now has her two bottom teeth, and she has started some solids. A blend of pureed carrots, apples and parsnips seem to be her favorite so far.

As far as personality goes, Faith is laid back and delightfully joyful. She takes Trey's "playing" in stride (despite the fact that I often have to pull him off her), and she absolutely adores her brother! He has the ability to elicit belly laughs from her, and they are so endearing! She is all girl--sweet and charming. She loves to cuddle, and she loves her Daddy's attention. When he's around, she wants his eye on her, and the feeling is mutual. While I love the little-boy masculinity so evident in Trey, I adore the soft femininity of Faith. In a way, her feminine presence even makes me more aware of my own. She brings about a beautiful balance to our family, and I am so thankful the Lord chose to give her to us!

This past weekend we celebrated Carter's fifth birthday. Rachael & Ricardo had horses brought in for the kiddos to ride, and this was the first year Trey rode all by himself. He had a blast. Little Faithy was loved on by the whole Roberts clan, and she posed for a few melt-your-heart pics. I seriously cannot get enough of her! She is so sweet, and such an absolute delight. Her most recent developments: she cut her first two teeth, so no more toothless grins. She's determined to start crawling, and she's had her first taste of solid foods. Her facial expressions when she tastes sweet potatoes are priceless! We are immensely blessed!

On Friday, March 11 we celebrated Trey's third birthday. BJ took the day off, and we enjoyed time at the zoo. Later that night we had dinner and cake with our little fouresome. Trey had requested a turtle cake, so I whipped one up using vanilla cake for the shell and Rice Krispie treats to form the head and legs. It turned out to be quite darling! Unfortunately, I did not snap pics of it.

On Saturday, we continued the festivities with a party at Little Gym. My parents, Mark and Brittany came down from Missouri, and BJ's parents as well as Rachael, Ricardo and their boys, Carter and Christian, came down from Wichita Falls. Trey had quite the fun time! My family was also able to stay for a few more days (the guys golfed, and the girls went to pick out Brittany's veil), so it was a good time all around.

We recently had Faith's photos and our family portraits taken by the ever-talented Ross Benton (the same photographer who photographed our engagements, our wedding and Trey's portrait sessions). As always. he did a fantastic job. The hard part is now choosing the images ... as you can see below, there are a host of beautiful shots. These are just a few favorites I wanted to share.

On a similar note, Faith is doing really well and Trey is adjusting quite splendidly to his role of big brother. Faith is now 9 weeks, and at her two month appt., she weighed in at 14 pounds, 1/2 ounce and was 25 inches. She is more and more interactive each day, and it's so much fun to see her smile and hear her little noises. She is just the sweetest little girl, and we are so blessed!!

Faith's room is a whimsical bird theme, and these eggs are her initials. Trey was "helping" with this shot.

Introducing Faith Shalene

On Monday, September 13 at 4:26 pm, we welcomed the arrival of little Faith Shalene! Born 1 day before her due date, she weighed in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20 inches long. In two weeks she put on nearly a pound, so she's doing well, and we're all adjusting nicely. Trey is the sweetest big brother, and our family couldn't be more blessed! I promise to post lots more pics and some additional details soon, but for now I wanted to (at the very least) get a couple pictures of our precious little girl posted.

We spent the July 4th weekend in Missouri with my family and had a great time. The weather was gorgeous ... overcast (only when you're from Texas and used to 100-degree sunny days do you wish for overcast skies) with temps in the mid 80s. I'll blog more about the trip later (housework calls following the vacation, and I'm frantically working on finishing up a story for Fort Worth, Texas magazine), but I wanted to go ahead and get a couple pics posted.

The past two weeks, our family has been struck with upper respiratory infections, walking pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and an ear infection. I was struck with the worst of it, and now 11 days later, I am FINALLY feeling better. Thank goodness my mom came down for nearly a week and a half to help out (we originally intended to get a few things accomplished for the nursery, but that got put on the back burner!).

I couldn't have done it without you, Mom ... so a huge thank you! We love you!

Trey's Last Day of School,

Sayonara School, Hello Summer!

Trey's last day of preschool was yesterday. Hard to believe that it has been nearly nine months since he started. I still remember how nervous and sad I was that first day ... leaving him in someone else's care for 5 hours. Funny, I was just as sad celebrating his last day. Mainly because I realized how quickly the time had flown, but also because he loves school, and he's really thrived there! He'll be going two days a week in the fall. But until then, we'll be enjoying summer, which is exactly how his class celebrated their last day.

His teachers brought an inflatable water slide for the kiddos, so they spent their last hour playing in the water and then enjoying a snack before going home. Here are a few snapshots from the festivities.

Trey's First MLB Game

Earlier this week we took Trey to his first major league baseball game. The Rangers were playing the LA Angels, and thanks to BJ, we had great seats right behind home plate. Trey thoroughly enjoyed the game, and it seems we have quite the baseball fan on our hands! BJ also almost caught us a foul ball, but the ball hit by Josh Hamilton ricocheted off his bare hands, and someone else got lucky. BJ had the imprint of the baseball seams in his hand for several hours after!

We found out yesterday that we're going to be welcoming a sweet baby girl into our lives come September, and Trey is going to have a little sister! It's taken us a bit by surprise (and BJ jokes that we need to start her wedding fund now), but we're excited! We're tossing around names and haven't decided on anything yet, but we'll share the news when we do. For now, this little girl is doing well, and she's become quite the active little one.

May the Lord continue to protect and nurture her now and into the future!

Our weather has been gorgeous lately! We took advantage of it this weekend with a jaunt to Art in the Square in Southlake and dinner alfresco at Central Market, and I fully intended to continue the enjoyment today. So Trey and I went on a picnic at the Botanic Gardens this afternoon, just the two of us! He loves the gardens, and we couldn't have had a prettier day. I had hoped to snap some images of Trey and the garden grounds in spring, but alas, as Murphy's Law would have it, my batteries were dead! (Maybe that's not Murphy's Law ... maybe that was just my failure to prepare!) In any case, I did snap some with my phone. I tried to doctor them a bit, but they're not the best quality. Still, here are a few scenes from today.

Trey's Birthday Party and our Easter Celebration

It's been quite the busy weekend at our household! My family arrived Friday night and stayed through the weekend to celebrate Trey's second birthday party on Saturday and Easter on Sunday. Trey, who received these boots as a birthday present from his Aunt Rachael, Uncle Ricardo and cousins Carter and Christian, has worn the boots nearly the entire weekend, so it's a great pic to commemorate the weekend activities!

My family (Dad, Mom, brother, sister-in-law, niece, brother and his fiancee) arrived from Missouri Friday night. Saturday was a flurry of activity, with lots of time spent playing outside and grilled hamburgers with homemade buns and potato salad for lunch! Here Trey is with my dad digging in the dirt in our backyard with gardening tools gifted to him from our neighbors, Les and Jane ... it's one of his favorite activities.

Later in the afternoon, we had Trey's second birthday party at The Little Gym (he attends here once a week and loves it; the party didn't disappoint). Though his party had originally been scheduled for two weeks ago, we had to cancel due to snow (in March ... in Texas ... crazy!). It worked out well though, since the rescheduled date allowed my family to join us for his party and the Easter holiday. Trey and all his friends seemed to have a blast! And the adults had nearly as much fun as the kiddos!

TCU Easter Egg Hunt 2010

This Sunday was the annual TCU alumni Easter Egg Hunt. This was Trey's second year to partake in the hunt, and we all had a lot of fun. Thankfully, the weather was absolutely gorgeous! I love, love these pics from the festivities. Enjoy!

Carter's Birthday

Trey's cousin (BJ"s sister's son), Carter celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday. The birthday boy and his friends rode horses at a therapeutic horse stable in Wichita Falls, TX. We celebrated with Carter and the fam for the day.

BJ thought it would be fun to get in the spirit, so he and Trey donned their matching overalls for the occasion. These were a gift from my mom, and they're the same overalls my grandfather Kjellin lived in as he farmed. Grandpa would be so proud! And I just love this picture! My two farmers, right in the heart of suburbia!

Trey had been talking about Carter's party and horses, but when it came to it, he was hesitant to ride (nevermind the fact that he'd ridden last year at Carter's 3rd birthday party). The stable owner allowed him to walk beside her as she led a horse, which Trey thought was a delight.

Eventually we got him to ride with his uncle Ricardo. Once he was riding, he loved it!

After the party we headed to BJ's parents, and the three boys had a blast playing together! I regret that I didn't catch some of their antics with my camera. I think we have some exciting adventures to look forward to with these three!

day, and this stuff is divine!

Saddle Up Cowboy

For a while now, I've had an idea in my mind for a pillow I've been wanting to make Trey. On Friday night I finally bit the bullet and crafted this, using my own pattern.
It turned out so cute, I just had to share! I used all scrap fabric from previous projects, so my total cost for this little charmer: $0. It did take several hours (the decorative stitch around the horse was trying, and sewing that rope to the sham was a beast), but it was well worth it! It adds a pop of color to his room and furthers his subtle cowboy themed space!

I'm planning on posting a tutorial for the project on The Mom's Dish, so check back there soon if you want to try your hand at this.

Also exciting is the fact that the little carrot and lettuce seedlings we planted last week are showing some signs of life. So exciting! Now we'll see if I can actually keep the seedlings alive this year!

Yes, you have to look really hard, but if you look in the peat pot in the upper left corner, you can see some green (actually it looks white because I took this in direct sunlight, so it's washed out, but it really IS green!) poking through!

I think it's high time we announce our exciting news on here! We are thrilled to share that we will be welcoming the arrival of our second child in mid September. We should find out the sex in approximately one month. At this point, unlike with Trey who I knew was a little boy, I don't really have a strong inclination one way or the other. We'll be delighted with a little girl or another little boy! Here was our sonogram at 12 weeks to determine gestation. It's amazing the detail you can see at such a young stage! At one point, he or she brought his/her little hand up and rested it on his/her forehead, and we could perfectly make out the little hand! Can't wait to meet this one!

Trey is 2!!

On Thursday, March 11, our little man turned 2! It's hard to believe that it was two years ago that we brought him home ... a tiny (well, as tiny as 9 lbs, 1/2 oz can be!) newborn, so new and delicate to us, yet a little boy who had already captured our hearts! Today, we can't even begin to imagine our lives without him.

Trey brings such joy, richness, laughter and life to our family! And he's such a vivacious little guy ... so full of energy and expression. He's learning and growing by leaps and bounds everyday. The other day he surprised me as he pointed out the letter A and told me what it was. As he colors, he says "T-R, T-R" as though he's spelling his name, and when I write it out and ask him what it says, he pronounces "Trey." He counts to ten, and we'll often count items in his books as we read, which he LOVES to do. Reading has become a staple routine in our family before his nap and bedtime. He loves stories of all genres, but he is especially into Thomas the Tank Engine and Curious George at the moment. I'm sure his favorites will be something different next week! He's quite the thankful little guy too, taking a LONG time to say his bedtime prayers as he thanks the Lord for everything imaginable (horses, bears, snacks, football, mommy, daddy, friends, fish, books, monkeys, baseball ... and the list goes on!). And we couldn't be more thankful for the blessing of him ourselves!

So to celebrate the absolute joy that he is, BJ took Thursday off work and we made Trey's birthday all about him. I made banana pancakes in the morning, and we served them complete with two candles, which he loved. After breakfast, we got ready and headed to Little Gym so he could play and burn energy. Here he is before we headed that way:

After Little Gym we went to Southlake where we walked around and got him two new pairs of shoes. We couldn't have asked for a prettier day, so we went to Central Market for lunch where we sat outside on the patio, and he played on the playground after indulging in macaroni and cheese. I took my camera with us to chronicle the day. But it ended up in the car most of the time, so you'll have to excuse the lack of pictures.

Afterward it was home for nap time. After Trey woke, we were blessed with a full rainbow, God's birthday gift to the little guy. Our bradford pears are also in bloom, and they were a lovely complement to the rainbow.

And then it was dinner at the house with chocolate cupcakes and candles, which he successfully blew out on his own.
After the cupcakes however, it became quite entertaining! BJ and I had purchased Trey a personalized backpack and matching lunchbox from Pottery Barn kids. I thought he'd feel like a big boy walking into school with his big-boy backpack. But when we brought his presents out, which he was quite excited about, he opened them and then asked "Presents? Presents?" He then opened the backpack and the lunchbox looking for his "presents." His face was so crushed when there was nothing inside. BJ and I felt like the worst parents; but we were laughing so hard at his reaction I had tears streaming down my cheeks! (Really, what were we thinking? Who buys their two-year-old a backpack for his birthday?) So in a desperate attempt to make good on his presents, I ran to his room and grabbed a gift from his first birthday ... one we'd put away until he was a bit older. Thankfully, he was delighted with his "present"--a fishing pole and sunglasses (thank you Jason and Sherrie Weiser!)!

Snowstorm pics and our first official ER visit

Life has been a bit eventful around here with our little man! A couple weeks ago we received one of the worst snowstorms to ever hit Dallas/Fort Worth. With 13 inches recorded, it was by far the most snow I've ever seen to fall on our little part of Texas, and the snowstorm went down as the most snowfall on record in a 24-hour period. Though Trey isn't a HUGE fan of the white stuff, we did bundle him up so he could get out and enjoy it for a little bit. Here he is with the snowman I built. Unfortunately, he was more interested in standing in the garage blowing bubbles than actually helping me build him, but at least he posed for the picture. Oh, and note the gardening spade, which he stuck where the snowman's nose should be.

And here we are after trekking to the playground, which Trey was bummed to discover is difficult to climb on when covered in snow.

Another one of the little guy. He's all smiles ... but really, snow isn't his favorite thing! I think it's the layers I put him in in preparation ... he can hardly move!

Our ER Adventure

After our adventure in the snow, we went inside to warm up. The evening progressed as normal, but later that night, we had an adventure of a different kind. Trey woke up at 11 pm gasping for breath and with the unmistakeable croup cough. Though he had croup last year, we were able to manage it with steam showers and a humidifier. Unfortunately, that was not the case this year. Instinctively BJ and I knew, the worst snowstorm on record or not, we had to get him to the ER. We threw a bag together and off to Cook Children's we went. The roads were a bit treacherous, and I jut prayed the whole way that the Lord would get us there safely.

We arrived, and they instantly took us back and began treating our little man. Within 15 minutes of arriving, Trey was breathing substantially better. (My heartfelt thanks goes out to the staff at Cook's ... they were wonderful. We are so thankful to have such a renowned pediatric hospital in our backyard.) At 4 am we were discharged and we sleepily made our way back home. Of course, our energetic boy was up at 7:30 that morning, causing for groggy parents all day, but praise the Lord he was feeling quite a bit better. It was an adventure, but one I sure hope we don't repeat!

When I'm preparing dinner or doing some other work in the kitchen, Trey will often sit in our dining room and look out the front window with Dillion and Sadie by his side. He typically has some kind of snack with him, because after all, it's dinner time, and making the little guy wait to eat anything until it's ready is simply torture. Unfortunately, the majority of his snack often gets fed to the dogs, and though I hate wasting Annie's Organic Graham Bunnies on our two furry friends, I often find it's just not a battle worth fighting. He's content for a little while, and a few extra pounds on the pups is a small price to pay.

Yesterday was no exception, although this time, his food didn't exactly make it into the dogs' mouths. Trey had a bowl of hummus and some carrots. He'd been sitting quietly in the front, so I didn't worry about him ... that is until BJ walked in and gasped, "Trey ... what are you doing (hysterically laughing at the same time). Instead of eating his hummus, Trey had decided to use it as finger paint!

And that my friends, is his canvas! Our window smeared beyond recognition with roasted red pepper hummus! It was disgusting; of course Trey thought it was delightful! Thankfully he did not smear it on the walls, so a little glass cleaner took it right off!

Hear he is again, absolutely thrilled with the work of his hands (and thoroughly enjoying Mom and Dad's reaction).

I've been meaning to see this film for a while now. So as Trey was napping this afternoon, BJ and I finally took the time to sit down and watch it. Though I've been a gradual convert to the organic lifestyle for some time, the film was astounding. I highly recommend it to anyone who cares about the health of their own self and their family. Knowledge is power ... and you can watch it for free at this site. It's well worth your time.

At it's conclusion, I asked BJ what he thought, and he patted my leg and said, "Keep doing what you're doing!" Meaning buying organic and seeking out local vendors of free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. As I continue to explore some of these options, I'll try to post about them. Protect Your Right to Parent Your Children

** Though I don't usually post on issues of a political nature, this cannot be ignored. Hearing news of this issue today, I could not ignore the compelling to post about it. I implore you to take time to read this, pass it on (you are free to repost the entirety of this entry as it appears without any copyright infringement issues) and take action! We as parents must cry out in protection of our innate Parental Rights. **

Protect Your Right to Parent Your Children

In 1925, the Supreme Court declared that "the child is not the mere creature of the State; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations." (Pierce v. Society of Sisters, 268 U.S. 510)

This right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children is one that has been protected in the U.S. for decades, and it is a right that any parent knows is fundamentally innate. The government should not be allowed to usurp our right to raise our children as we see fit (except in the obvious case of abuse or neglect, wherein the government would be interceding to protect the child from proven harm). Unfortunately though, parental rights are coming under serious attack. Our federal court system has an increasing low view of parental rights. (Click here for an article that gives more information on this topic and cites specific court cases sadly showing blatant disregard for parents' rights.)

But the war waging within our nation's borders is just part of the story. Currently, the UN is seeking to ratify the The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). According toParentalRights.org, this treaty, if made binding upon our country, would give the government the power to intervene in a child's life to advance "the best interests of the child." Though it sounds harmless, it sets the stage for some truly frightening scenarios. ParentalRights.orgstates that instead of following due process, the treaty would give government agencies the right to "override your parental choices at their whim because they would determine what is in 'the best interest of the child.'" What this means is that the government would have a long-arm parental reach into your home; rather than you having the right to decide what's in the best interest of your child, that right would now fall to the government. (For more information on the treaty, click here.)

What might this treaty look like in action? If you spank you child, you could be deemed an unfit parent and have your child removed from your custody. If you homeschool your children, homeschooling could be considered an act that is not in the best interest of the children, and you could be demanded to put them in a formal education system or risk losing custody of them. If you require your children to attend church, and they hear messages contrary to popular, societal beliefs, the children's church involvement could be considered harmful to their development, and you could be demanded to cease their church attendance or risk losing custody ... and the list goes on. The potential ramifications of this treaty are truly frightening! And as any parent who has borne children knows, it refutes the innate right of a parent to raise their child as they see fit.

In response to this threat, a Parental Rights Amendment has been proposed that would ensure the protection of the right of parents to raise their children. Only a constitutional amendment will supersede international law that seeks to undermine parents' rights. According toParentalRights.org, an amendment is "the only comprehensive response to the attack on parental rights across our nation." (Click here to view the draft text for the amendment.)

Frankly, this is an issue that we as parents cannot ignore! Take time today to get involved ... Educate yourself on the topic, make others aware of the threat, and take action.ParentalRights.org is the best place to start. With a host of resources as well as links on how to join the fight, they're our best defense against this threat. If you click on "How Can I Help?" and then select "Take Action at the National Level" you will be provided with information on how to contact your state senators and representatives to urge them to support either House Joint Resolution 42, the Parental Rights Amendment (House version) or Senate Joint Resolution 16, the Parental Rights Amendment (Senate version). It doesn't take much time to contact them, and our voices must ring loudly on this matter! While you're at ParentalRights.org, take a moment to read a couple of the staff articles. The content will astound you! You can also become a citizen co-sponsor of the amendment by clicking here.

Again, this is a battle that we must engage! We cannot afford to stand on the sidelines while our parental rights are deliberately usurped. Please join us in this fight! Contact your government representatives, make others aware and pray for a hedge protection around parents and this country. We must fight for the protection of our freedoms. For as Ronald Reagan said, "Freedome is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."

Our Naked Boy

Recently Trey has discovered that he can undress himself, including the removal of his diaper. It's happened once while in the living room with BJ and I; he thought it was hilarious to undress and then run from us. And a couple times now I have put him down for a nap only to look in the video monitor a couple minutes later to see him jumping around in his bed naked as a jaybird. It's not that I mind him napping sans clothing, but I can't have him sleeping without his diaper ... I'm sure you understand why! Apart from duct-taping his diaper (which BJ suggested. He was joking, sort of ... ). I'm at a loss. I've tried putting him in his zip-up footed pajamas for nap time, which are harder to get off than slip-on pants, but he's mastered those too. Can anyone offer some help? I'm open to any suggestions!

New Year's Eve and a Couple Images Just for Fun

This year, we spent New Year's Eve as a threesome at home. It was nice to have a low-pressure, relaxed holiday. But don't let the laid-back atmosphere fool you ... our dinner was phenomenal! Stuffed salmon, mushroom risotto (it's a two-person job, and BJ did a great job at the constant stirring), roasted garlic broccoli and french bread dressed with garlic cheese spread. We also indulged in a bottle of wine we brought back from our trip to Napa a few years ago.

As part of my holiday decorating, I planted Paperwhites in a glass vase anchored with river rocks and simply poured water into the base of the bulb. If you've never forced Paperwhites in this manner, you're doing yourself a disservice. They're exceptionally easy, and they bring a fragrant bloom in the dead of winter. It's a little breath of spring just when we need it most.

While in Wichita Falls, we got a lot of snow ... there was easily ten inches on the ground. It was indeed surprising to have a white Christmas. Sandwiched in between our trips to Missouri and Wichita Falls, we were also able to enjoy a quiet Christmas with Trey here at home. BJ and I indulged in a new computer for ourselves, so that was our gift to one another. Thus, Trey got the gift-opening attention all to himself. He seemed quite pleased with that.

You'll notice there isn't a Christmas tree in these pictures ... well, that's because we simply failed to put it up! Horrible, I know! But we did deck the halls with all the other decorations. There were live evergreen wreaths hanging from the three windows you see in the background, and my potted paper whites (on the coffee table) had yet to bloom--they're now in full bloom. I also wrapped tiny boxes as gifts and topped them with satin ribbon and berries and placed them around the house. Garland also topped the mantle and other windows.

Trey opens his gift from my grandparents, a stuffed Mickey and a Mickey sweatshirt ... Mickey is one of his favorite characters! He just loves this!

Christmas in Wichita Falls

Following our time in Missouri, we packed up and (after a short stop at home) headed to Wichita Falls. The holidays there were fun as well, and the boys (Trey and his cousins, Carter and Christian) got more toys than they possibly know what to do with. BJ and I also got a few toys to note. The Wii has proven to be a blast and has fostered a competitive spirit within our marriage!

Christmas in Missouri

This year we celebrated Christmas three different times: once in Missouri, once at home and once in Wichita Falls. Though we traditionally swap holidays with the Roberts and Kelly sides of our families, my brother and his wife had just had their little girl, so we made a quick trip to the Show-Me state to meet little Addison and celebrate the holiday. My grandparents from Florida joined us as well, so we had a fun time with four generations in the house. I'll post pics of the other Christmases shortly.

This year, BJ and I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time at our home. His parents and my parents joined us (our siblings were unable to make it), as did our friends, Dorothy, Nicholas and their three girls. The family attends our church, and I met Dorothy at my Tuesday morning ladies Bible study. She and her family are refugees from Zimbabwe, and this was their first Thanksgiving. We wanted them to share in the festivities with us ... but more than us being a blessing to them, they were a blessing to us. Their stories of Zimbabwe reminded us of how much we truly have to be thankful for and of how blessed we are to be living in this country, freely enjoying all the liberties that are bestowed upon us. It was a sweet time of giving thanks and enjoying friendship and family indeed.

The food was delicious as well! I served brined turkey (if you've never had a brined turkey, I highly recommend it), gravy, maple-glazed spiced carrots, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole (compliments of BJ's mom), fresh green beans with almonds and crescent rolls. For dessert, my mom brought the pies, and I made fresh whipped cream to top it. We also dolloped the whipped cream into our coffee, which was divine!

The table before any food was served (we actually used the pool table; BJ built a tabletop that set upon it, and I sewed a tablecloth to fit). I set this the night before to minimize Thanksgiving day stress.

Merry Thanksmas!

A couple weeks ago, we headed to the farm in Kansas to celebrate our first-ever Kjellin family Thanksmas holiday weekend (Kjellin is pronounced Shalene, and yes, it's where my name came from). This is the farm my mom grew up on, and she and her siblings have since inherited it. My uncle and his family live in the farm house, which they've completely renovated.

Because so many of my cousins now have their own children and their own holiday traditions, it's difficult to get the family together for Thanksgiving and Christmas. As a result, my aunt Amy organized Thanksmas ... a reunion weekend where we feast on Thanksgiving fare and exchange Christmas gifts. All were in attendance, including my cousin, Ben, his wife Tasha, and their four kids, who drove down from Alaska to spend some time in Kansas. (That's right, they drove! It's a long story!) It was a fantastic weekend, and if Trey could have it his way, we'd be living on the farm where he could be outside all day long.

Update ...

I've been terrible about posting updates! I must get better! For the time being, here's what's been going on:

Trey has now had his second major injury. On Friday October 23 he was bending over to pick up a ball and he and the edge of our coffee table collided. We rushed him to CareNow (knowing an emergency room visit would last several hours), and he ended up having to have four stitches above his left eye. The whole experience was an honest nightmare, and I don't wish it on any mother. BJ was much calmer than me (thank goodness), so I'm glad he was here for the ordeal. Trey has since had the stitches removed, and he's no worse for the wear, but I certainly hope and pray that we're done with injuries for a long while. Being Mom to a rambunctious all-boy toddler is wearing a bit on my nerves!
Trey has recently mastered the art of jumping ... for a while he would attempt to clear air, but both feet never quite left the ground. He's finally learned how to clear air, and he thinks it's greatest thing. He even jumps off ottomans, stairs, chairs into our arms, and he loves it!
He's talking quite a bit more, and his vocabulary has really expanded. He loves pointing out animals, saying their names and then following up with the sounds they make. Anytime I tell him we're going to the zoo, he runs around making the sounds of elephants and gorillas!
Trey has recently discovered new bedtime bedfellows: his basketball, soccer ball and football. He won't go to bed without them!

TCU Homecoming was this past weekend (Halloween day), so we headed out to the game. It was a good time of football and reunions with great friends. Since it was Halloween, I decided Trey could wear his cowboy costume, but I quickly realized I was going to be the one carrying his cowboy hat. So though he looks like he lacks Horned Frog spirit, it's only because we dressed him in his cowboy garb. Believe me, there's no lack of TCU spirit with this little guy. When you ask him what a frog says, he replies: "Go Frogs, GO!" It's really quite endearing!

The First Day of School

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, Trey started his first day of preschool! He's going once a week to the Early Learning Center at our church (though most preschoolers his age go twice a week, we were blessed to find a couple who wanted to split, so their little girl goes on Mondays and Trey goes on Wednesdays). He's only had two classes to date, but he's done wonderfully, and he seems to really enjoy his time at school. He's apparently even one of the best nappers in his class, which is the one thing I was the most concerned about. And while he's there from 9-2, I'm enjoying a good chunk of time to get a host of tasks accomplished myself. The BIG 3-0

As of Aug. 24, I no longer have one foot in youth and one foot in adulthood ... or something like that. What is it about 30 that sounds so, well, older? Whatever it is, I now find myself smack dab in the middle of it! I have now been officially inducted into the 30-something club!

To celebrate this monumental birthday, BJ took me to dinner at Eddie Vs, a fabulous, swanky little seafood eatery. And then on Saturday, he and my good friends and family surprised me with a wonderful birthday soiree. My family trekked down from Missouri for the event, and BJ's family (his grandparents from New Jersey included) came down from Wichita Falls. It was a wonderful time of wine tasting, food pairings and memories of our trip to Napa. And it was all sans kiddos for a couple hours! If this is any indication of the years to come, I think I'll quite enjoy being a member of this club! Many thanks to BJ, Kat, Kathleen, my family and my friends for making this such a memorable birthday! It was such a sweet celebration, and I appreciated it more than you may know! I love you all!

The wine glasses were tagged with each guest's name. My sweet hostess friends, Kat and Kathleen, then put these name tags on a key ring for me to keep as the guest list.

Some of the wine ... guests were told to choose a bottle with characteristics that reminded them of me (thankfully, "aged" wasn't one of those characteristics!). It was a really sweet gesture.

It has sadly been WAY too long since I have posted an update! So rather than detail all of the happenings that have occurred throughout the last month or so, I've posted some pics with captions. Hopefully you can surmise all the fun and adventures we've been having!

Earlier this week we had Trey's 15-month photo shoot. Our friend and photographer extraordinaire, Ross Benton, drove up from San Antonio to shoot our little guy at the Botanic Gardens. Though his portfolio certainly speaks for itself, let me just say that Ross is extraordinarily talented! Several of you have seen his images at our home in the past and have asked about him. An Abomination

Friends,

Every day I hear dialogue discussing new political policies, geopolitical skirmishes, and various stances on moral issues. Since there is so much currently happening that could potentially impact our freedoms in general and our freedom of religion in particular, I think it is vitally important that we be aware of current events, as well as political policies and unrest within our own borders and around the globe.

That being said, today I watched a shocking report from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The Organization of the Islamic Conference is trying to seize control of the Temple Mount--it is the same temple King Solomon built, the same temple where Jesus taught. Should this actually happen, the consequences would be grave for the nation of Israel and Christians around the world.

A Much-Needed Update

It's been a while since I've posted, so it's definitely time for a Roberts update. All is well, although BJ had knee surgery a week ago and is slowly recovering. (Nothing like having your two guys nursing an injury one right after another!) Having him out of commission for a short while has definitely made me appreciate how much he helps me out around the house in the evenings and on the weekends!

As for Trey, he's growing so quickly, and he's without a doubt a bona-fide toddler. He's running, climbing, yelling, antagonizing the dogs and yelling "BALL" to any round item. He's started Little Gym and LOVES the chance to explore all of the apparatus. He's also very mechanically inclined, and is extremely interested in how things work. He loves putting lids on and taking them off, turning light switches off and on, and taking his toys apart. And since it's summer, he's spending his fair share of time in the water. He's still a bit unsure of venturing out in the pool by himself, but he's slowly gaining confidence.

In addition, our little boy has also started throwing temper tantrums. The doc said the terrible twos would start around 1 year, and I believe they've started. We had our first public tantrum on Wednesday while at the grocery store. You know ... the kind where other shoppers throw disapproving glances your way as you try desperately to calm a screaming child and check out as quickly as possible? It was a trying experience, to say the least, and I only hope that next time I'll be better prepared. I shared the experience with the doc at Trey's 15 month well-baby visit and was told that it's actually a good sign ... means his brain is developing properly. I gues that's the consolation prize for enduring the experience!

All in all, things are well, and we continue to be amazed at the incredible blessings the Lord so graciously bestows on us daily.

Now onto the pics ... Unfortunately, I've lost the USB cable to my camera (either that, or Trey has relocated it to a place yet unknown, which is very likely). So until I run out to buy a new one, a few random shots from our point-and-shoot will have to suffice:

Our first major injury

Well, Trey has unfortunately had his first major injury. We were at the zoo yesterday with some moms/kiddos from our Friday playgroup, and Trey took a tumble off a bench while we were eating lunch. I thought he was just crying from the scare of it, but as I walked towards the exit, he was holding his arm and crying pretty hard. I started to get really worried, so I went to member services to see if there was a medic who could check him out so I could know how to best proceed. Thankfully, as I stood waiting, a friend of ours (Mark Wylie) who just happens to be a spinal surgeon walked in with his daughter. In tears, I explained what had happened. Mark examined Trey and said that no bones were broken and that he seemed to be OK (praise the Lord that He ordained our timing!). I took him home, but Trey was still in pain, so we headed to the pediatricians. An X-ray revealed what Mark had diagnosed: no fractured bones, but the doc thinks it's a stress fracture in his clavicle (which apparently wouldn't show up on an x-ray at this point).

Needless to say, BJ and I have been pretty bummed by the whole ordeal, and Trey had quite a rough night last night. The doc gave us a sling, but trying to get a one-year-old to wear it is next to impossible. So, BJ and I did the next best thing ... we stabilized his arm to his body with an ace bandage. It seems to be helping, since the lack of movement has helped to alleviate the pain. But it sure is a sad sight! Here's a few pics (taken with my phone, so don't mind the quality) of our little boy being the trooper he is despite his wounded arm!

According to the Department of Homeland Security, I am a Right-Wing Extremist

Dear friends and family,

I don't normally post on political issues ... the intent of this blog is to archive the pictures, amusements and daily happenings of our little threesome. That being said, I received an e mail from my father-in-law today, and I couldn't help but comment and post it here. It's copied in full at the bottom.

The e mail is a commentary by Oliver North regarding a report recently issued by the Department of Homeland Security titled: “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.” (Click here to read the report in full.) In that report, the DHS identifies pro-lifers and those who support the definition of marriage as one man and one woman as the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States. In his response to the report, Jay Sekulow, chief counself for the American Center for Law and Justice said, "Pointing to those who are opposed to abortion and same-sex marriage, the report envisions what it calls the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States as these pro-life groups, those opposed to immigration, and returning veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." Thus, If you support the sanctity of life, if you support the traditional, Biblical view of marriage, if you oppose illegal immigration, this administration has just labeled you a right-wing extremist.

There is a currently an ultra-radical liberal undercurrent sweeping through this nation that is downright frightening. We now live in a day and age where people will fight for the life of a tree in the name of global warming while they justify taking the life of an unborn child. And those of us defending the sanctity of life are elevated to a threat above terrorists bent on our destruction! What a twisted sense of morality! We have a president who has proposed a budget that will propel the US into a $1.75 trillion debt this year (and this coming from a man who promised the American people a "net spending cut" during his candidacy), and yet despite the unfathomable financial burden he's placing upon the shoulders of our children, this same man has approved US money to fund overseas abortions. The level of depravity to which we've sunk is downright sickening.

The very values our nation was founded on are being threatened, and the future society our children stand to inherit appears bleak to say the least--a society with no moral compass where absolute truths no longer exist, a society where those holding Judeo-Christian beliefs are deemed dangerous and their courage to speak out on issues is labeled a hate crime. With such an overt assault on our basic human rights, we can no longer sit idly by merely discussing these issues and hoping against all hope that they won't affect us. No ... there is a fight going on before our very eyes that is not of flesh and blood. There something big going on, and it is time that we GOT ON OUR KNEES AND PRAYED. We must pray for our country, our leaders, our communities, our families. It's time to call out to the Lord that the eyes of our nation might be opened. Are you a right-wing extremist? Will you get one your knees and join us?

WASHINGTON -- According to the U.S. government, I am an extremist. I am a Christian and meet regularly with other Christians to study God's word. My faith convinces me the prophecies in the Holy Bible are true. I believe in the sanctity of human life, oppose abortion, and want to preserve marriage as the union of a man and a woman. I am a veteran with skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. I own several firearms, and I frequently shoot them, buy ammunition, and consider efforts to infringe on my Second Amendment rights to be wrong and unconstitutional. I fervently support the sovereignty of the United States, and I am deeply concerned about our economy, increasingly higher taxes, illegal immigration, soaring unemployment, and actions by our government that will bury my children beneath a mountain of debt.

Apparently, all this makes me a "rightwing extremist." At least, that's what it says in the April 7 "Assessment" issued by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security. The nine-page report, titled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," is full of warnings about American citizens who share any part of my background or subscribe to the beliefs above. It is one of the most alarming documents produced by our government that I ever have read.
Evidently, neither you nor I ever was supposed to read this "Assessment." At the bottom of the cover page is a warning that it is "not to be released to the public, the media, or other personnel who do not have a valid need-to-know." We're Americans. We have a need to know what's going on in our government, especially in an administration that promised to be "transparent." A full copy of the report is posted at http://www.freedomalliance.org/.

The "Assessment" purports to alert law enforcement officials that "rightwing extremists" -- the term is used more than 35 times -- are intent on exploiting Americans who have strongly held beliefs on everything from Christian faith to rising unemployment, U.S. sovereignty and the Second Amendment. It vilifies those of us in these categories by references to neo-Nazis, racists, militias, white supremacists and other "hate groups." Notably, the report includes a warning that right-wing extremism "may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."

Though the report proffers a passing reference to the First Amendment, it is replete with bias against conservative thought, writing and communications. On Page 3, law enforcement authorities are warned, "Rightwing extremist chatter on the Internet continues to focus on the economy, the perceived (emphasis added) loss of U.S. jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors, and home foreclosures."

That is a frightening acknowledgment that political speech is being monitored in America. It is also wrong. It's not "perception." It is fact. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the manufacturing and construction sectors have lost 161,000 jobs and 126,000 jobs, respectively, last month alone.

In its "Key Findings," the DHS manuscript boldly charges that "rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues" and offers this warning: "The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks."

Under the heading "Disgruntled Military Veterans," the report alleges: "Rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists -- including lone wolves or small terrorist cells -- to carry out violence." These unsubstantiated claims are followed by reminders that Timothy McVeigh, who bombed the Oklahoma City federal building in 1995, was a military veteran. Omitted is any reference to the fact that McVeigh was simply one of more than 40 million veterans of the U.S. armed forces.

Thirteen lines after this egregious, unconscionable slander against those of us who are military combat veterans, DHS makes the stunning charge that "lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States."

According to this DHS "Assessment," the most dangerous threat we face here at home isn't from radical imams preaching violence in U.S. mosques and madrassas, Islamists recruiting in our prisons, Somali terrorists enticing young immigrants to become suicide bombers, or Hamas, Hezbollah or al-Qaida operatives plotting mass murder. No, according to DHS, the real threat comes from what our government labels "rightwing extremist ideology."

Mr. Obama should disavow this report publicly and fire the officials responsible for issuing it. Those who prepare his remarks for the occasion should insert in the teleprompter former Sen. Barry Goldwater's words on the subject: "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice."
